dc.description.abstract This study focuses on using graphic novels to interest students and develop their reading skills in English. The participants were ESL (English as a second language) students taking their fourth and final English class (INGL 3202) of the basic track in the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez. This class in particular was selected because it focuses mostly on readings and reactions towards these. When the students were given the choice of whether to read a more traditional text or a graphic novel, the majority chose the second option. At the end of the unit the participants expressed that the graphic novels helped them to better understand what was happening in the story and relate to the reading. Results demonstrated that integrating graphic novels in the classroom facilitated the reading process for students, and their motivation to read in English increased exponentially. en_US
