Indoor air quality in the production buildings of Surfaceigniter Corporation in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico was assessed by studying the temporal distribution of filamentous fungi. A Krestrel 4000 monitor was used to record environmental conditions in the production zone during four sampling replicates. Using a two-step Andersen sampler and exposed plates containing Corn Meal Agar, fungal colonies from both pigmented and hyaline spores were isolated. Fungal isolates were identified based on macroscopic and microscopic characteristics. Passalora spp. (0.14%), Aspergillus spp. (0.2%), Cladosporium spp. (18.0%), Fusarium spp. (6.2%), Talaromyces spp. (10.2 %), Penicillium spp. (2.0%), Tilletiopsis spp. (0.032), various coelomycetes (0.11%), yeasts (1.2%), non-identified spores (0.29%), and non-sporulating fungi (58.0%) were isolated. Isolations of non- sporulating fungi ranged from 44 to 68%. Breathable spores (< 0.4 mm) isolated ranged from 82.5 to 94.5%. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences between sampling periods (p <0.0001) and major deposition events of colony forming units (CFU’s) from 3:00 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. Total colony forming units (CFU’s) documented from this study were less than the OSHA established limit (1000 CFU’s /m3). There was no significant correlation between the CFU’s isolated and the temperature (R2 =0.09) or between CFU`s and the relative humidity (R2 =0.06). Spores concentrations and environmental conditions observed in this investigation can be use to define a good indoor air quality.
