PublicationGeophysical exploration and characterization of the Yauco formation at the UPRM Hydrologic Study Site, Mayagüez, P.R.( 2010) Abrams Rivera, Deborah T. ; Asencio, Eugenio ; College of Arts and Sciences - Sciences ; Padilla, Ingrid ; Joyce, James ; Department of Geology ; Sharma, Anand D.This investigation characterizes the physical properties of the subsurface geology of the UPRM Hydrologic Study Site using surface geophysical techniques to generate a geological model that explains the hydraulic observations at the site. The geophysical data images a highly variable (vertically and horizontally) weathered zones classified as residual soil (I-A to I-C) and a transition zone (II-A) faulted by a complex reverse fault. The location and orientation of the complex reverse fault was determined by interpreting the sharp boundary imaged by the geophysical dataset and recently acquired information from a nearby road cut. Residual soil exert semi-confining conditions on the underlying weathered rock (transition zone, II-A) aquifer. The geophysical data identified a remnant more-resistant weathered Yauco Fm. which has retained its apparent easterly dipping (~20º) structure. This investigation concludes that water production at the Hydrologic Study Site appears to be contained within the highly permeable Weathered Rock Transition Zone (IIA).
