    Sample ESL oral tests to assess English proficiency skills of pre-basic students at UPRM

    No specific test exists to assess oral proficiency of English as a Second Language in PR. Therefore, new instruments were designed, developed, and piloted for undergraduate Pre-Basic students. The Sample Oral Test developed was composed of two tasks: the Personal Oral Interview (POI) and the Picture Cued Story (PCS). The objectives that guided this research were to develop socio-demographic and an oral proficiency profiles of Pre-Basic (INGL 0066) students, and compare and describe significant findings between male and female oral skills. Findings revealed that most students believed English was important for instrumental purposes. Students’ oral proficiency was mainly novice and the timing to conduct the test varied. Males took more time to complete the test and achieved better performance evaluation compared to females. The tests administered were both subjective and objective in nature: PCS and POI respectively. Limitations, pedagogical implications, and future research are also included.
