Publication Adapting RPG’s in an ESL college classroom(2011) Cruz-Rodríguez, Francheska; Rivera, Rosita L.; College of Arts and Sciences - Arts; Pratt, Ellen; Vicente, Nancy V.; Carroll, Kevin S.; Department of English; Aponte, Aníbal J.In this study, Role Playing Games (RPG‟s) were adapted and used in an ESL classroom in the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez, in order to explore the students' different identities, to engage their imagination, to socially interact and collaborate with each other, to let students make choices and to facilitate a collaborative learning environment. The purpose of this research was to take into consideration issues that came up during collaborative learning activities, and analyze student motivation in the UPRM Basic English classroom through the use of RPG‟s. Collaborative learning activities included interaction between students; students interacted with each other by performing RPG‟s that helped them to achieve the same goal: to pass the course. Results demonstrated that integrating technology in the classroom helped to change the traditional methods for teaching English to basic language learners. RPG‟s allowed the teacher to integrate language basic skills such as: speaking, writing, listening and reading in a second language.
