Publication Feasibility analysis of microgrid implementation in compliance with the Puerto Rico 9028-PREB regulation(2021-07-05) Rodríguez Martínez, Omar Felipe; Andrade Rengifo, Fabio; College of Engineering; Irizarry Rivera, Agustín A.; Orama Exclusa, Lionel R.; Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering; Lorenzo González, EdgardoIn power systems, the implementation of renewable energies has had a great impact and penetration due to the increase in efficiency that has been occurring over the years and the decrease in the prices of the different technologies. These factors have served as the basis for the development and study of microgrids. Although the microgrids are an excellent solution for several problems present today (global warming, improvements in the distribution system, losses, user costs, etc.), the implementation of these in the power system has brought new challenges due to the variability of sources that depend on environmental factors for energy production. For this reason, it is necessary to structure standards that allow the development and implementation of microgrids without affecting the stability of the system. This thesis presents a feasibility study of the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau (PREB) microgrid regulation. The study involves a microgrid implementation into a distribution system, assuring the compliance with the 9028-regulation. Solar irradiance and natural gas were the distributed energy resources (DER) used in the solar photovoltaic and combined heat and power generators used in the microgrid. A southern town in Puerto Rico was chosen to represent the distribution system. A resistive branch model was used to represent the distributions line and an equivalent circuit model was used to represent the Li-ion battery energy storage system of the microgrid. The models and data acquired for this study, was using in MATLAB/SIMULINK and the RT-LAB software for real-time simulation.
