Publication Análisis de alternativas y diseño del sistema de disposición de aguas residuales para la Égida San Benito en Cabo Rojo, PR.(2018-12-06) Garcia, Eugenio; Tarafa-Vélez, Pedro J.; College of Engineering; Molina, Omar; Rivera, Jorge; Department of Civil Engineering; Tirado, RebeccaAn elderly housing construction project is proposed for the municipality of Cabo Rojo. The development does not have the necessary infrastructure available in order to connect to the Puerto Rico’s Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA) sanitary sewer system, thus, it is necessary to consider a private wastewater treatment and disposal alternative. One of the biggest challenges in the wastewater industry is the selection of the most sustainable wastewater treatment system. The assessment of alternatives for this project was accomplished using the Analytical Network Process (ANP) technique. Several wastewater treatment systems were evaluated: 1) extended aeration, 2) contact and stabilization and 3) sequence batch reactors. The latter alternative achieved the highest priority; therefore, it is the most sustainable for the proposed development. The result was validated using a sensitivity analysis process which allows for the evaluation of significant variations in the results of the priorities obtained. The wastewater treatment system design included the pretreatment, biological reactors, secondary clarifiers, sludge stabilization, effluent storage and final underground drip injection processes. Effluent reuse was considered in the final disposal design. The results of the investigation demonstrate that incorporating the assessment technique before the design phase is a useful tool to maintain a balance between sustainability factors. For Puerto Rico, given the need to achieve a long-term compliance, this tool provides the necessary balanced assessment of the more sustainable system for the project.
