True yam (Dioscorea spp.) is the most cultivated tuber in Puerto Rico. Dry rot (DR) disease caused by the root lesion nematode Pratylenchus coffeae and internal dry rot disease caused by Penicillium spp., are the main cause of losses in seeds of Dioscorea rotundata in the island. Currently, in Puerto Rico, the variety of products registered to control the disease is limited. Therefore, the objective of this research was to identify the presence of Pratylenchus coffeae and the causal agent of internal dry rot in yam tubers and to evaluate different control methods. Sesame oil, sesame oil (2x), sesame oil + oxamyl, cinnamon oil, thyme oil and clove oil, and oxamyl were evaluated for PS control. Besides, mancozeb, mancozeb 50 %, sodium hipoclorite 1 % and commercial cal were evaluated to control internal dry rot. Mancozeb significantly reduced the symptoms of internal dry rot disease compared to the negative control. Also, the pathogenicity of 10 isolates of Penicillium spp. was confirmed and described as the primary causal agent of the internal dry rot disease in tubers of Dioscorea rotundata cv. Habanero. None of the treatments evaluated for the control of dry rot caused by P. coffeae reduced the populations of this nematode and the damage caused in the tuber. Given the importance of this crop in PR, it is necessary to develop new research focused on the management of both diseases.
