This research was divided into two stages that were worked simultaneously. The main objective of the first stage was to make a comparison between the costs and the benefits of utilize Crotalaria juncea as a soil conservation practice in Puerto Rico. To achieve this, a survey was conducted among farmers and biotechnology companies that had used this practice before. Data were aggregated using descriptive statistics. The values that could not be assessed by the participants were estimated using an engineering approach. It was concluded that using the conservation practice understudy would provide the farmer a net benefit of $ 2,382.15 after the first year of establishing the practice and using the tomato as the main crop. The objective of the second stage of the research was to identify what factors influence the adoption or non-adoption of conservation practices among farmers on the island. The data was collected through a survey. The poll was administered among a representative sample of 239 farmers. The data were analyzed by frequency tables and using descriptive statistics. From this stage, we concluded that the factors that motivated and continue to motivate farmers to use some type of conservation practice are increasing the health of the soil and counteracting an erosion problem. In addition, 63.8% of the interviewees indicated that they did not use cover crops as a conservation practice, while 43.1% knew the benefits of these.
