Publication Estudio de la influencia del cemento Pórtland en las propiedades del hormigón con cenizas volantes(2012) Rosario-Lúgaro, Ámbar; Molina-Bas, Omar I.; College of Engineering; Maldonado Fortunet, Francisco; Padilla Cestero, Ingrid; Department of Civil Engineering; Ramírez Martínez, WilsonThe durability of concrete is influenced by its porous network. The use of fly ash in concrete mixtures produces additional hydration products, changing its micro-structure. As a concrete admixture, fly ash not only improves its durable properties; it also provides economic and environmental benefits. However it is unclear how the properties of the cement used in the mixture influence the performance of concrete when fly ash is added. This work studies the influence of fly ash on the durability of concrete mixed with different cements with the same designation (type I) and the influence of the percent of fly ash as a partial substitution of the cements in the study. Each of the three type I cements used in the study was mixed with three different percentages of fly ash as a cement substitution. Durability, physical properties and mechanical properties tests were performed on the concrete samples from each mix. The results show that the performance of concrete with fly ash varies depending on the characteristics of the cement used, even when they are under the same designation. Furthermore it is observed that the optimal percent of fly ash as a cement substitution not only depends on the properties of the fly ash, it also depends on the properties of the cement used in the mix.
