This research explores the inclusion of social media as a criterion to be considered in the stakeholder analysis of a project. It is based on the assumption that stakeholders can use social media to increase their power and influence the decision making process. In order to validate this assumption, we aim to answer the following question: can the stakeholders of a complex project increase their salience and influence decision making through social media, and thus, affect the project outcome? Answering this question is important for project managers to understand how social media increases the complexity of a project, and affects its performance. To this end, this research will use as a case study the project known in Puerto Rico as “Vía Verde/Gasoducto del Norte”. Therefore, this research contributes to the body of knowledge of project management since there is no literature suggesting the use of social media as a criterion for stakeholder analysis.
