A damage detection location scheme for structures is developed with the use of singular value decomposition and a matrix norm. Damage is represented as a reduction in stiffness producing a set of linear differential equations. The system eigenvalues and eigenvectors, that may be obtained experimentally, are found through mathematical modeling of the structure. The eigenvectors and eigenvalues along with singular value decomposition are used to determine the characteristic matrix of the standard eigenvector problem of the system. The differences of the values of the column norms are compared with the undamaged and damaged structure. The methodology was compared with the eigenvector curvature technique showing capacity to predict location were the curvature technique failed. A case including the use of random noise in the eigenvector was tested to simulate experimental error. Results yielded the same predictive behavior.
