Publication Understanding the atmospheric turbulence structure parameter, Cn2, in the littoral regime(2006) Font Jiménez, Carlos O.; Chang, Mark J.L.; College of Arts and Science - Science; Roura Davila, Erick; Jiménez, Héctor; Department of Physics; Rosado Román, JoséUnderstanding optical propagation through atmospheric turbulence is a highly important step for the efficient implementation of a free space laser communication system and for achieving diffraction limited imaging over long paths. The project reported has studied the refractive index structure parameter, Cn2, as function of local bulk meteorological conditions. We present the data collected and the methodology used during the campaigns of the past 3 years. In our analysis we address the greatest limitation that affects studies of turbulence data, the non-stationary and non-linear characteristics which severely limit the usefulness of traditional time series analysis. We have devised a new mathematical technique, referred to as the Hilbert Phase Analysis (HPA) and we report on its implementation and testing in this work.
