Publication Crecimiento bacteriano en el área de la Parguera: Respuesta a factores climáticos y al flujo de agua proveniente del área de Guánica(2008) Rojas Ortega, Edgard G.; Otero Morales, Ernesto; College of Arts and Sciences - Sciences; Corredor, Jorge E.; Macchiavelli, Raúl E.; Aponte, Nilda E.; Department of Marine Sciences; Cruz, Astrid J.The temporal and spatial variability of bacterial abundance (BA), production (BP) and respiration (BR) was compared to phytoplankton biomass, salinity, temperature, turbidity, and fluorescence of dissolved organic matter was examined during pluviosity extremes in La Parguera and Guánica Bay. A Fiber Optic Oxygen System (FOXY; Ocean Optics), was used to estimate bacterial respiration,a novel application in aquatic systems. Estimates of BA, BR, BP and growth efficiency were 0.27 - 7.82 x 106 cells/ml, 160 - 2,264 μg O2/l/d, 1.0 - 39.6 μg C/l/d and 1 - 14% in Guánica while 0.16 -1.24 x 106 cells/ml, 292 - 1,945 μg O2/l/d, 0.3 - 33.2 μg C/l/d and 0.2 - 5% in La Parguera. The presence of significant microbial metabolic gradients especially during periods of increased precipitation underscores the importance of studies that examine the relation of microbial components with environmental cues in tropical systems sustaining important resources.
