Pleurotus ostreatus, a white-rot fungus, has proven to be excellent in the removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and in this project we are investigating it’s ability to remove the following heavy metals from soil: lead, cadmium, copper and cobalt. Samples of soil containing these metals were taken from two different places in the town of Barceloneta. The samples were inoculated with the fungus and the amount of the metals in the soil was measured before adding the fungus, after 2 weeks of adding the fungus and one month after the inoculation. The results varied between the metals with some removed in greater quantity than others. Cobalt and cadmium reported the most relevant results with concentrations continually decreasing from the beginning to the end of the investigation.
