This study is intended to evaluate different non-chemical agricultural practices such as organic amendments, biocontrol fungi and antagonist legumes in the control of plant parasitic nematodes. Greenhouse and field trials were conducted at the Alzamora Farm, UPR-Mayagüez and at the Agricultural Experiment Substation of Isabela and Corozal. At field trials, Paecilomyces lilacinus, a mycorrizal mixture, and chitin intercropped with Canavalia ensiformis were assessed. Plant parasitic nematode populations were reduced with the application fo the fugus P. lilacinus and chitin plots planted with the antagonist legume, Canavalia, when compared to the chemical treatment. However, non-significant differences were observed among these treatments (α>0.05). These results indicate that the use of biological products associated with Canavalia as intercrop is a feasible alternative for the control of plantain parasitic nematodes as an effective tool to reduce the use of chemical products in agricultural lands.
