(2023-12-10) Kage, Natalie; Soto Santiago, Sandra L.; College of Arts and Sciences - Art; Géliga Vargas, Jocelyn A.; Rivera, Rosita L.; Department of English; Parés Matos, Elsie I.
In today's globalized world where English is used as a lingua franca, there has been an increase in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching jobs in many countries over the past couple of decades (Bentley, 2023). The research in this study focused on the lives and experiences of four participants that have lived and worked in South Korea. Interviews were conducted with each of the participants about their lives before they moved to South Korea to become EFL teachers and their experiences during their time in that country. The data were analyzed through qualitative research methodologies to understand how each participant gained communicative competence and then in turn how that knowledge influenced their pedagogy. The participants have acquired significant knowledge about themselves as individuals and professionals and through their lived experiences have gained communicative competence which in turn influenced their pedagogy.
