Publication Bilingual language learning experiences: Generational differences in Puerto Rico(2023-05-11) Hernandez Caban, Jeniffer; Rivera, Rosita L.; College of Arts and Sciences - Art; Irizarry, José M.; Vicente, Nancy V.; Department of English; Rodríguez, GrisellAbstract This research was conducted to observe differences among bilinguals and their language learning experiences. The uniqueness of this study relies on cross-generational experiences to be compared and contrasted in the context of Puerto Rico. Therefore, three participants from different generations were strategically selected. To address formal education perspectives, participants share in common having studied in the island’s public education system. Linguistic autobiographies (Pavlenko, 2007) were used as a theoretical framework and semi-structured interviews were tools as part of the data-collection method (Richards, 2009). Data reveals how learning English as a second language in Puerto Rico is majorly influenced by teachers in the English classroom and siblings with prior input to the language. Although English remains to be used passively on the island, generations continue to highlight its importance, and it is gradually transforming in cross-linguistic patterns. Moreover, translanguaging was acknowledged as everyday speech among society, and English was preferred in certain communities of practice. However, the reasons for these participants to become bilingual were remarkably different.
