(2022-12-12) Jorge Mercado, Yaira; Valentín Rodríguez, Ángela; College of Arts and Sciences - Art; Acosta Lugo, Maribel; Sefranek Potter, Mary; Department of Hispanic Studies; Rodríguez, Grisell
The main purpose of this research was to engage in a decolonial feminist analysis of current transformations in the traditional performance of Mayagüez bomba that disrupt the gender binary. In addition, an exploration of how these ruptures influence the lyrics of songs presented by the Círculo de Barrileras in 2016 was significant. First, Puerto Rican bomba was set in time and space through a brief historical summary. Then, the gender perspective theories of Marcela Lagarde and the decoloniality of gender as theorized by María Lugones and Ochy Curiel were conceptualized, as well as their relevance in the study of Puerto Rican bomba. Framed within these theories, an analysis of the changes in the performance of Mayagüez bomba was carried out, focusing especially on gender roles in the execution of musical instruments and dance steps, changes in traditional clothing and song writing. Finally, a literary analysis of three contemporary bomba songs written by Mayagüez women, which contain feminist and transgressive themes, was carried out as a reflection of some relevant transformations in performance.
