Publication Propiedades mecánicas de materiales compuestos a nivel micro y macro considerando degradación higrotérmica(2009-06) Obando Fuertes, Juan C.; Pando López, Miguel A.; College of Engineering; Godoy, Luis A.; Acosta, Felipe J.; Department of Civil Engineering; Banerjee, JayGlass fiber reinforced polymers (GFRP) are widely used in civil engineering applications, however they are still not considered a main stream material. This is believed to be related to its relatively high cost and insufficient reliable data on its long term behavior and durability when exposed to environmental conditions. Considerable research efforts have been devoted to the study of durability of GFRP composites, the majority of these studies have been phenomenological in nature and a clear understanding of this complex issue has still not been achieved. This thesis involves a study of hygrothermal durability at the micro and macro levels. The results obtained show degradation of the 3 material types investigated and that the E-glass fiber composite degradation is greater than the vinylester resin degradation. This greater degradation was found to be related to the presence of localized damage near the interface between the fiber and resin matrix in the composite.
