Cambios estructurales de la industria lechera de Puerto Rico durante los años de 1974 a 2005

The main purpose during this research was to study the structural changes in the dairy industry in Puerto Rico from 1974 to 2005, and their possible effects by using a descriptive analysis utilizing the data available of first class farms subscribed to the Oficina de la Reglamentación de la Industria Lechera of Puerto Rico. The statistical analysis indicated that both number of farms and areas use to graze were reduced through time. However, the average number of cows per farm has grown, which has cause the reduction of smaller farms. Analyzing the quantity of concentrated sold in the last years is observed that the concentrated has been increased in the farms, and the quantity of fertilizer has been decreased. The coefficient of Hirschman-Herfindahl (HHI) per size of production suggests a high concentration in the farms which produces more than 2,000 quarters per day, and the participation of the farms which produces less than 500 quarters per day are practically null.
