[2] and Lane et al. [5], for simulating the effects of atmospheric turbulence on the phase of wavefronts of light. The results of the simulation methods are the so-called phase screens, which are two-dimensional grids of points whose values represent the local phase of the wavefront. We calculate the covariance matrix from the analytic expression of a phase screen obeying Kolmogorov statistics, giving a basis of eigenvectors. The phase screens are found as a linear combination of these vectors with Gaussian random coefficients. The low resolution phase screens, found by the Fourier transform of the spatial power spectrum of Kolmogorov turbulence, are inadequate because simply applying the Fourier transform produces a phase screen that deviates from the analytic model in all but the small central region.
