According to the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System in 2016 young people between 18 to 24 years old were the population with the most percentage underweight people in the United States of America. Underweight status has been associated with poverty, food insecurity and chronic diseases. However, they could be present changes in weight due malnutrition, unemployment and behaviors of high consumption of alcohol and tobacco. This research studied how the effects of poverty, programs against poverty and food insecurity affects the percentage of young people underweight between 18 to 24 years in the United States. All the recollected data was selected from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance, US Census Bureau and Bureau of Economic Analysis. This research used microdata from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance for 2006-2015 period. The results showed that individual factors such as being a woman, student, suffering from mental illness and not having children increase the probability of being underweight. Other factors of the community such as the level of poverty and population proportion with incomes between $35,000 and $49,999 also increase underweight.
