Publication Estudios de las propiedades de los morteros que emplean altas dosis de cenizas volantes activadas alcalinamente(2014) Guzmán-Castillo, Johanna; Molina-Bas, Omar I.; College of Engineering; González Quevedo, Antonio A.; Portela Gauthier, Genock; Department of Civil Engineering; Arroyo Caraballo, José R.Portland cement is the worldwide most commonly used material in construction. However, it is known that the Portland cement industries have a significant negative impact in the environment. For this reason, there is a study focused on available alternatives to reduce the cement industry effects by reducing the amount of cement used in the construction industry. A study of the mechanical and durability behavior of mixes containing high volume of fly ash alkali-activated with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) was developed. For this study, mortar mixes to be used for masonry and wall finishing purposes were cast with 0% to 75% replacement of Portland cement Type I by Type F fly ash. In mortars with high volume fly ash subjected to alkali-activation (AAFA) process results in lower compression strength capacity with respect to the mortars that contains high volume of fly ash without activators (HVFA) and with 100% Portland cement. The HVFA mortars presents less expansion with respect to the 100% Portland cement mortar and the AAFA mortar. Also, the mortar mixes with HVFA gained more resistance to water absorption. In general, the HVFA mortars studied presents equal or improved durability behavior. In general, with the conditions used for this study, it was determined that the activator was not necessary to have a mortar mix with important performance, that reduces the amount of Portland cement and increase the use of fly ash. In conclusion, the results obtained from this study allow preceding study based on the use of mortar with HVFA to be used for masonry and wall finishing purposes using available raw material in local market.
