In the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez (UPRM), most faculties use English with varying expectations about how students should use the language and other academic communication skills such as speaking, writing, reading, comprehension, and grammar while navigating through various disciplines. Considering attending university as an ongoing socialization process, this research portrays these skills as literacies and explores how students taking First-Year Intermediate English courses and professors from all faculties of UPRM perceive students’ competence as communicators. The objective is to present the needs of the Intermediate English population and consider if these courses address them. This data was acquired in four ways: 1) a sociodemographic survey gathering information on students’ academic background, 2) a questionnaire examining students’ experiences and expectations for their Intermediate English courses, 3) a questionnaire for professors inquiring language use in the classroom and their perceptions of students’ communicative competence, and 4) a collection of student writing as artifacts. The results of the data showed students were satisfied with their English courses, meanwhile professors considered there are areas students can improve. Concerning student writing, students were proficient writers but could improve in grammar, mechanics, and meeting their assignments’ writing purpose.
