The objective of this research was the physical and chemical characterization of lignin based amendments and the determination of the effects of its use on soil microorganisms. Results show that calcium lignosulfonate (LC) contains allelopathic phenolic compounds in higher amounts when compared to lignin extracted from sweet corn. On the other hand, it adds minerals and nutrients to the soil, slightly lowers its pH and increases the cation exchange capacity. Also, if organic matter is added as an amendment to the soil, the presence of microorganisms in that amended soil will increase. If the amendment is lignin-based, the presence of lignolytic organisms will also increase. The fact that these bioindicators increase having used this LC amendment confirms that it does help to improve the quality of the soil, but like many things in the world of agriculture, in adequate quantities (40:1) to obtain the ideal results and see improvements in the soil and in the crop.
