Publication La relaciĆ³n entre las destrezas motoras fundamentales y la actividad fĆsica en los estudiantes universitarios mayores de 17 aƱos de la Universidad de Puerto Rico, Recinto de MayagĆ¼ez.(2016-07-01) Romero, Lilliana; QuiƱones, Carlos E.; College of Arts and Sciences - Art; Amaral, Marta; Ćlvarez, RamĆ³n; Department of Kinesiology; Rivera, Rosita L.Physical activity (PA) is associated with the prevention of multiple diseases, helping to maintain healthy lifestyle behavior. The PA levels in Puerto Rico are alarming low. It is expected that individuals with higher level of Fundamental Motors Skills (FMS) to be more physically active, and conversely. The correlation between physical activity, and fundamental motors skills among the students of University of Puerto Rico, MayagĆ¼ez Campus (UPRM), has not been documented. The purpose of this study was to correlate the PA and FMS in students of UPRM. A sample of 91 students, 17 years or older, completed a PA assessment using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and the Walk 4 Life Pedometer for 7 consecutive days. They also completed the measure of body composition (height, weight, and waist and hip circumferences), and a battery of motor skill tests (run, over throw, and horizontal jump). A total FMS score was determined based on the objective evaluation. Spearman correlations analyze was used to detect correlations between variables. The results indicated that students did not fulfill the current physical activity recommendation with the use of the pedometer (6,546.6 steps/day + 3234). Nevertheless, according to IPAQ questionnaire criteria, the population obtained a moderate vigorous physical activity (5,499 MET + 6993), and had more than 285 minutes/day of sedentary time in the most active day. Body mass index (BMI) and waist to hip ratio were 24.6Ā±5.9 kg/m2, and 0.86Ā±0.1 cm, respectively (classifying the group as normal weight). Total motor skills score was 19.4Ā±4.38; were 0 is the most lowest score and 25 is a perfect scored. Physical Activity (PA) (step/day) was not correlated with FMS (r2= .034, P= .75). PA (MET) was not correlated with FMS (r2= .124, P= .24). However, PA (MET) was correlated with overhand throw (r2= .255, P= .02). Also, PA (MET) was correlated with overhand throw in sportsmen (r2= 470, P= .04) and sportsmen (r2= 445, P= .05). In conclusion, the participants in this study did not obtained with current amount of steps recommended by PA. They did not developed an expected level of FMS, because is recommend that for their age range, they should dominate these skills.
