The objective of this study was to determine the effect of L-carnitine: 0, 50, or 100 mg/kg in the Japanese quail var. Texas A&M under tropical conditions, from 1-11 weeks of age on production parameters. Another goal was to observe the effect of this supplementation on females and males on the composition and meat traits at 7, 9 and 11 weeks of age. The experimental design consisted of split plots completely randomized with two replicates (n=28 quails) in each treatment for 1-5 weeks of age, and three replicates (n=16 quails) for 6-11 weeks of age. At 7, 9 and 11 weeks, 6 males and 6 females per treatment were randomly selected to determine: abdominal fat, hot carcass yield, cold carcass weight, wings, legs with thighs, breast with bone, Pectoralis major, pH, water holding capacity, and tenderness. At 11 weeks old, females treated with 100 mg/kg had significantly less weight on the breast with bone. On the other hand, quails treated with 100 mg/kg showed worse feed conversion ratio after 6 weeks, and higher hot carcass yield. In synthesis, the effect of L-carnitine could be observed on productive parameters after 6 weeks of age, but not on meat traits.
