Publication Impacto del proyecto Centro de Educación en Tecnología y Administración para Agricultores (CETAA) en la adquisición de destrezas en el uso de la computadora y su aplicación para el manejo y mejoramiento del negocio agrícola.(2018) Solano-Peláez, Orisnela M.; Rodríguez-Rodríguez, María del C.; College of Arts and Sciences – Sciences; Huerta Jiménez, José M.; Gregory Crespo, Alexandra; Agricultural Experimental Station; Curbelo, AuryThe purpose for this study was to evaluate the impact that the project Centro de Educación en Tecnología y Administración para Agricultores (CETAA) on the acquisition of skills in the use of computer for the improvement of agribusiness, the study was carried out in the municipalities of Yauco, Las Marías, Sabana Grande, Mayagüez, San Germán, Las Piedras and Coamo. To achieve the objectives for the study, a questionnaire was designed and administered to 57 participants in each municipality. The information obtained was analyzed by frequency distribution, tables, graphs, correlation test and chi-square. The results reflect that the skill in which they are best trained is in the use of the internet, 20% of the interviewees requested services or subsidies in the State and Federal Government Agencies. The statistical test determined that schooling is related to the acquisition of a computer and access to the internet.Publication Económico y perfil de los productores orgánicos en Puerto Rico, 2007.(2010) Solano-Peláez, Orisnela M.; González-Martínez, Gladys M.; College of Agricultural Sciences; Rodríguez Pérez, Robinson; Ortíz López, Juan; González Soto, Jorge A.; Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology; Armstrong, ArístidesThe purpose of this study was to examine organic farming in Puerto Rico, describe the producers profile, business characteristics, production practices, and problems and needs they encounter. A questionnaire was developed to collect the data. Microsoft Office Excel was used to analyzed and summarize the data. Results showed that 83% of the participants are men, 46% are married, 43% have 34 years or less, and 46.7% have a college degree. In addition, 57% of the participants’ income comes from the organic operation, and around 50% do not have profits. Organic farmers in Puerto Rico produce mostly vegetables, 53% of the participants produced beans, 43% eggplant, and 40% tomatoes. Furthermore, organic farmers indicate that the biggest limitation for this industry is the lack of programs and incentives from the government. Puerto Rico’s organic farms are not certified, 23% of the participants have an inspection made by a local organization.
