In this work, the design of an advanced process control strategy for a batch fluid bed dryer was achieved. This accomplishment will become an educational tool for the Center for Pharmaceutical Development and Learning (CPEDaL) and for the Chemical Engineering Department at University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez Campus (UPR-RUM). The design of the control system was implemented from the ground up, comprising several stages such as identification of the dynamic response of the process, model fitting, design of controllers and integration of Process Analytical Technologies (PAT) in a real industrial process control environment such as DeltaV. Calibration curves for auxiliary equipment, a gain scheduling PI and a PI-D controller, a model predictive controller, a Near Infrared (NIR) and two drying models were obtained. Additionally, this work brought forth the challenges of system integration related to the communication of distributed control systems with advances of sensing techniques such as NIR. Furthermore, the troubleshooting process involved to solve such issues was also addressed. Therefore, this project has the potential to benefit chemical engineering students at UPR- RUM by becoming a class companion for the process control and the pharmaceutical operations class from the minor concentration in pharmaceutical engineering of UPR-RUM. Additionally, this work has the potential to serve as demonstration of educational activities for high school students aspiring to participate in CPEDaL's yearly educational activities.
