The defects caused by sanitary manholes on the asphalt pavement may affect the safety of the drivers on the roadway. The objective of this project is to study the effect of the manhole in the asphalt pavement in Puerto Rico. The methodology consisted on open interviews to experts of different branches within civil engineering and a visual survey following the Pavement Condition Index (PCI). The interviews explained the approved standards, common practices, and the different engineering roles involved in the construction of the manholes. According to the data gathered from the survey, the defects related to the manholes on the asphalt pavement can cause a reduction of two ratings in the PCI scale. The conclusion presents standardized components that enable the construction of the base and asphalt layer over the last section of the manhole. These design alternatives can reduce the negative effect on the asphalt pavement surface which should increase roadway safety.
