Publication Mortar mix design with fly ash and nano-silica for structural patchment(2020-07-24) Castro-Cortés, Alfer; Suárez, O. Marcelo; College of Engineering; Suárez, Luis E.; Acosta-Costa, Felipe J.; Cáceres, Arsenio; Department of Civil Engineering; Cancelos, SilvinaMortars with sufficient bonding and mechanical strength are alternative remedies to restore the original resistance of a failed structural element, prolonging its longevity. The present thesis proposed the analysis of twelve mix designs containing nanosilica, fly ash, and Metamax as cement substitutes to enhance repairing mortars in terms of strength, adhesiveness, and controlled shrinkage. The said properties were evaluated in terms of their workability, penetration test behavior, compression strength response, and flexural strength. The compressive strength was determined from 24 hours, for early age evaluation, to 28 days. Flexural strength was evaluated on mortar-repaired beams from 7 to 90 curing days to evaluate early and late ages. As a result, designs with all material variating acrylic 10% to 13%, and one with 20% Metakaolin reached a 90-day flexural strength 23% higher than the epoxy one with a cost of 3/50 of the epoxy’s price.
