    Promoting critical literacy in pedagogy: A Caribbean literature approach

    This study focused on the effects of incorporating English Caribbean literature in an intermediate English course at UPRM for students enrolled in the class. The project consisted in the creation of a Caribbean literature unit with diverse texts to measure students’ acquisition of critical literacy and their English learning motivation during the semester. Multiple instruments were implemented to determine prior exposure to Caribbean literature among students such as a survey and interviews. The designed unit also focused on creating a safe environment by promoting a space for students to participate and share their different contexts. The findings from the study showed a rise in students’ motivation during the semester and that their experience in the course surpassed their expectations in an English class when comparing it to previous English courses. This study contributes to the understanding the possible impact that multiple pedagogical approaches can have on linguistically diverse students and the importance of considering varied materials to meet their learning needs.
