    This thesis uses the main concepts of “Ant Colony” optimization to develop a heuristic to find a setup that minimizes the pick time for a Fuji IP III pick and place machine. This heuristic can be used for board assembling process at the “Model Factory” in the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez. Furthermore, an optimization model has been formulated to minimize the pick time of the Fuji IP III pick and place machine. Considering the importance of parameter selection on the performance of the heuristic a methodology has been proposed to estimate these parameters such that consistent construction of good solutions is guaranteed and the negative effect of random fluctuations is diminished.
