Agriculture and coffee cultivation predominates in Puerto Rico’s history, economy and culture. This study focused on coffee production located in the upper part of the Loco River Hydrological Basin; an area with steep slopes and soils susceptible to erosion if conservation practices are not implemented. Traditional coffee farming practices have led to soil erosion and sedimentation deposited in lakes, rivers and ravines. The purpose of this research was to determine the perception of coffee growers in the upper part of the Loco River Hydrological Basin, about the soil conservation practices and educational efforts to stimulate their adoption. The results showed that the majority of coffee growers are males, with an average age of 51 years and their educational level is between high school and university. The average of years of experience working in agriculture is 28 years; most of the coffee growers are farm owners that have been dedicating 1-25 acres to coffee production. The main barrier to conservation practices is that planting areas are developed on steep slopes and there is no economic incentives provided to compensate for the implementation costs of conservation practices.
