Transient stability analysis of power systems with high penetration of renewable energy
(2022-11-07) Osorio García, David; Irizarry Rivera, Agustín A.; College of Engineering; Andrade Rengifo, Fabio; O’Neill Carrillo, Efraín; Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering; Ramírez Vargas, Juan E.
The fight against climate change and the supply of growing energy demands have lead to the evolution of electrical systems, including more renewable energy generation. Consequently, conventional energy is gradually displaced, changing the behavior of the system in the face of eventual disturbances. Despite the imminent changes, few studies have been focused on identifying the problems caused by the coexistence of both types of generation in different amounts. In this work, through the implementation of a fundamental machine-inverter system, with a high-fidelity modeling that includes the main components and controls of both types of generators, the response in the Time Domain of the Mixed Generation System to a severe disturbance is analyzed, systematically testing combinations of physical and control parameter adjustments to discover the dominant properties and mechanisms that allow to see how much the stable level of renewable energy penetration into the system can be maximized.
