Publication Frequency scanning folded slot antenna array(2006) Herrera-Saucedo, Silvia S.; Rodríguez-Solís, Rafael A.; College of Engineering; Colom-Ustariz, José; Cruz-Pol, Sandra L.; Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering; Díaz, WalterThe design and development of a folded slot antenna array operating at 9.5 GHz frequency is presented in this thesis. A series fed antenna array conformed by 16 elements is designed on a substrate with a permittivity of 6.15 and a thickness of 0.635mm, and fed with a coplanar wave guide transmission line. The process to obtain a broadside position of the beam and excitation of the elements in order to get a desired Taylor distribution is presented. The radiation and impedance characteristics of this array are examined. The array presents a scan range in elevation of 15o in a scan frequency range from 9.00 GHz to 9.5 GHZ (500 MHz), and the VSWR for the design is less than 2.4, with an average gain of 14 dB through the frequency range. The beam position changes from -14o to 1o as the frequency is swept. The 3 dB beamwidth is almost constant, starting from about 7.5o to 7.0o. The beamwidth decreases slightly as the frequency increases and the mainbeam moves toward the broadside position; these results are based on a linear array positioned on the X axis and the broadside direction is located a 0o.
