This work presents the design of an octave-bandwidth array utilizing stacked microstrip patches fed through aperture coupling. The array integrates metallic cavities and fences within the elements to minimize surface wave propagation in the substrates, thereby enhancing the front-to-back ratio. The designed 4x4 array ensures stable radiation patterns across its operating frequency range. It achieves a gain of 17.43 dB at 4 GHz and operates efficiently from 2 to 4 GHz with a Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR) of less than 2. The innovative use of metallic structures in the array’s elements significantly improves performance by reducing undesirable wave interactions, which is crucial for maintaining high efficiency and consistency in radiation characteristics. This design approach not only broadens the operational bandwidth but also ensures better control over the radiation pattern, making it highly suitable for advanced communication systems requiring reliable and wideband performance.
