This thesis evaluates the association between production costs and the quality of milk in dairy farms of Puerto Rico. The objective of this study was to identify the determinants of the milk quality in Puerto Rico. Furthermore, this thesis assesses the effect of using the Dairy Herd Improvement Association (DHIA) records on milk quality. This research also carried out a simulation of the implementation of different compensation regimes based on quality milk. To achieve these objectives, this investigation used data from the Quality Program of the Development Fund of the Dairy Industry and the 2016 Exhaustive Economic Study of the Dairy Industry Regulation Office (ORIL, Spanish acronym). As a determinant of milk quality three types of dependent variable where used: (1) bacterial count, (2) somatic cells, and (3) fat content. This thesis used a logistic regression. Results suggest that increases of the milk quote are associated with lower levels of bacterial counts and somatic cells. This result may imply that a minimum scale of the milk production is required to achieve minimum quality standards.
