Análisis económico para la implantación de la tecnología fotovoltaica a residencias en el área sur y suroeste de Puerto Rico

This study analyzed the economic feasibility of investing in photovoltaic technology at households in south-southwest Puerto Rico. There have been no mass implementation of this type of technology in Puerto Rico. A questionnaire was handed out to 342 Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) customers to determine the average monthly electricity consumption, and to estimate the cash flow generated with the photovoltaic system. Economic feasibility was measured using the Internal Rate of Return (IRR). The cash flow of a 2kW and 5kW of installed photovoltaic capacity was found and the IRR for each case was measured. It was found that it is not economically feasible to invest in photovoltaic technology in Puerto Rico at this point in time. Several public policy recommendations on how to make it economically feasible to invest in this type of technology were presented.
