Collembolans are small arthropods, abundant in litter and, often regarded as good indicators of soil health. Diversity and abundance of litter springtails was analyzed in a Mayaguez secondary forest in leaf litter of Castilla elastica, Roystonea borinquena and Bambusa vulgaris during 14 months. The 378 samples produced 38791 springtails, 35 species (of which seven are new reports for Puerto Rico) and three new species. The most common species were Isotomiella minor in leaf litter and Campylothorax sabanus in pitfall traps. Analyses of variance showed significant differences in species diversity and abundance in relation to litter type and sampling date. Regression analysis showed a positive relationship between springtail population size and sample humidity. Roystonea borinquena litter maintained the most favorable conditions for the springtail community, while that of Bambusa vulgaris produced the lowest diversity and abundance.
