Publication Representations of disaster in children’s literature: Intersections of trauma, creative writing, and education(2024-05-08) Marcial Acevedo, Yarelis; Chansky, Ricia; College of Arts and Sciences - Art; Lamore, Eric; RodrÃguez, Linda; Villanueva Vega, Marién; Department of English; Serrano Rosado , JanThis thesis centered on how authors of children's literature on trauma and disaster can structure their narratives through decisions of temporality and point of view to accurately represent the traumatic experiences related to natural disasters and in accordance with the ideologies of trauma experts. Therefore, this study explored how authors’ choices of temporality and point of view influence the message the books transmit by analyzing various books on natural disasters. The selected books included for analysis were The Magic School Bus: Inside a Hurricane, A Terrible Thing Happened, Flood, Flood Warning, A Place Where Hurricanes Happen, and Por ahà viene el huracán. Some significant issues found in the texts included: (1) a simplified and fast-paced recovery period after a disaster, which displays trauma as being forgotten or resolved with recovery; (2) a lack of space for characters to process emotions; (3) and a lack of characters who are survivors of disaster. These findings led to my creative chapter, Emma and Mia: A Story About Coming Together and Making a Change, where there is a more extended recovery period and an accurate representation of a survivor's perspective. Thus, Emma and Mia: A Story About Coming Together and Making a Change offers future children's literature writers on trauma and disaster an example of a survivor's narrative that upholds the ideas of trauma experts through the usage of temporality and point of view.
