Componentes principales y regresión logística: analizando el rendimiento académico de los estudiantes en matemática prebásica

In this research we analyze the factors associated with the academic performance of students in the course of Pre-Basic Mathematics (I semester 2010-2011), from the information obtained through three questionnaires, applied to a random sample of 404 students of the course. First, we did an exploratory analysis of the data by descriptive statistics, which allows the construction of the student’s profile. Second, we apply the multivariate technique of principal component analysis, which allowed us to define three new uncorrelated variables, from the quantitative variables of the study. Third, these three variables and some highlighted categorical variables in the profile were used to construct a prediction model for approval of the students in the course, from the multiple logistic regression technique. It was found that the fitted model is adequate and has a classification rate of 75.1%. The research results indicate that the "previous academic preparation, "the "inertia towards mathematics", the "perceived exertion" and " anxious trend” are the most influential factors in the success of students in this course.
