Sequence stratigraphic analysis of the Cotui Limestone, Upper Cretaceous of southwestern Puerto Rico
(2007) Bonilla-Rodríguez, Alvin J.; Santos-Mercado, Hernán; College of Arts and Sciences - Sciences; Joyce, James; Ramírez, Wilson; Department of Geology; Padilla, Ingrid
Different microfacies techniques were employed to study the sequences of deposition of the Cotui Limestone in southwestern Puerto Rico. These included the correlation between two sections, Cerro Buena Vista section in the municipality of Cabo Rojo and the Type Section in San German. This correlation was based on the characterization of parasequences and their parasequence sets in both localities. The parasequences were described with the Standard Microfacies Types and Facies Zones of 210 samples from the Cerro Buena Vista Section and 206 samples of the Type Section. The parasequence sets were used to interpret the governing system tract in the Cotui Limestone. The sequence of deposition of Cotui Limestone included deposits characteristic of transgressive system tracts (TST) at the base and highstand system tract (HST) at the top in both sections. The subsidence of the magmatic arc was interpreted as the mechanism that produced the deposition of these system tracts. Where the TST deposits represent subsidence high enough to produced migration of the facies belt in landward direction and the HST represents periods of low subsidence with a characteristic progradation of the platform.
