The Espeletia grandiflora Humb. & Bonpl. commonly known as frailejón is a plant of the Eastern Andes of Colombia, such that its function within the ecosystem is to regulate the production of water. In 2012, it was found in the Chingaza Paramo that the Espeletia grandiflora is being attacked by a moth, that could diminish its capacity to capture the water. This thesis proposes a discrete mathematical model with age structure and competition between stages to study the interaction between moth and frailejón. First, a non-lineal difference equation model is proposed to study the frailejón's poblation without herbivory. Numerical simulations of the model were made to evaluate how climatic variability affects the population growth of the frailejón, and in turn observe the general behavior of the system over several years. Finally, the frailejón model is added to the herbivorous stage, numerical simulations are made to evaluate the interaction frailejón-moth-climate. We conclude that there is coexistence between the plant and the herbivore, but the density of the plant is diminished by the attack.
