The apparent significant changes in Puerto Rico’s economy, due to minimum wage increases from the years 2007 through 2009, it’s pivotal to understand the impact that these years had in the workforce. These changes have not been positive to the companies with the small and mid-corporations. Several small and mid- corporations that belong to the “Centro Unido de Detallistas” and are located in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico participated in this study to provide and identify payroll increase, amount of layoffs and reduction in the workforce during the three years of the increase in the federal minimum wage. The findings considered the two highest impacts with the increase of the federal minimum wage are: the payroll increase substantially therefore expenses across all industries that belong to the “Centro Unido de Detallistas”, and that the amount of layoffs and reduction of the workforce were minimal.
