Knots and Links can occur in the axis of DNA molecules as result of diverse enzyme actions. For site-specific recombination events there is no way to observe details of the process, so molecular biologists resort to indirect methods to better understand how the enzyme changes the topology of the DNA molecule. We develop a formula that can be used to study site-specific recombination indirectly that in addition to give information about the topology of the molecule, gives also information about its geometry. By making some assumptions and using experimental data we show how our formula can be used for either predict products of site-specific recombination events and propose mechanism of actions of some recombinases.
