This research explores the ideation and selection methods used by interdisciplinary student teams who use Design Thinking during the early-design stage to create solutions to real-world problems. Two experiments were created to this end, studying the effectiveness of idea generation and idea selection methods separately. The Idea Generation experiment explored the effect of incorporating Design Heuristics Cards at different points of a Brainstorming session. A panel of two experts rated the teams’ ideas on the metrics of Novelty, Feasibility, and Market Fit. The Fluency of ideas was also observed. The Idea Selection experiment explored the effect of the addition of a rating exercise for the selection of a final idea after a student team had reduced a thirty-idea pool to their top five choices by voting. The final ideas selected by the student teams were compared to a select group of ideas curated from the thirty-idea pool by a panel of two experts. Results of the Idea Generation experiment shows that there is not a significant difference in the quality of the ideas generated by the students in relation to the method they used during ideation. Similarly, the Idea Selection Experiment shows that there is not a significant relation between the method used and the final selection by the teams. The groundwork is laid to continue the research with interdisciplinary teams. Recommendations are made on future work and possible improvements to the experiments.
