    Using media texts in writing instruction: An experimental case study in the intermediate English classroom at UPRM

    This thesis is concerned with the general area of studies of English as a Second Language (ESL) writing at the college level. The study examined the impact that the type of text used to guide students composition writing had on the students’ motivation to write and the quality of the writing students produce. The study was conducted with a class of students enrolled in Intermediate English II at the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez during the Fall 2022 semester. It compared student writing outcomes when the instructor employed traditional text-based literature, on the one hand, and audiovisual media texts, on the other. Since college students nowadays are conceived as digital natives, the study examined the extent to which their digital competence intervened in their English writing processes in efforts to reconceive media not just as entertainment but also as a pedagogical tool in the ESL classroom. The findings reveal that using media texts has a positive influence on student learning engagement and their writing performance.
