A; Mari Mutt, José A.; Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology; González Gill, LizzetteThe main objective of this study was to determine the production cost for alternative organic growing media used in the production of tropical ornamentals produced in pots and compare costs with the growing media used at this moment. In this study we worked with three varieties of ornamentals of economic interest to the farmers as: Euphorbia pulcherrima, Catharanthus roseus y Gerbera jamesonii. The alternate growing media proposed was a mixture of municipal composted biosolids and peat moss. To achieve this objective, the information was taken at the farms of two ornamental productions farmers from the town of Aibonito. It was used the mixture in three different proportions of biosolids: peat moss. The proportions were: 10:90, 25:75 y 50:50. For each proportion it was used thirty plants for each variety, being each farmer a replication. The plants were exposed to the same condition of light, watering and physical space as the plants that the farmer planted, the only difference was the growing media utilized. It was discovered that Euphorbia pulcherrima was more tolerant to a higher proportion of biosolids utilized, because it develops excellent against the control plants. Although, the Catharanthus roseus and Gerbera jamesonii were less tolerant to higher concentrations of biosolids in the growing media. The three proportions utilized in this experiment demonstrate to be an economic alternative for the farmers, because in all of them we can see savings in comparation with the growing media used with the control plants. This study can be used as base for future investigations.
